My name is Derek Smith and I am a 36 year old artist and graphic designer from Dearborn Michigan.
My parents introduced me to art at a very young age and I have been creating and designing ever since. I realized I wanted to be a graphic designer after my first trip the DIA (Detroit Institute of Art) and saw all of the wonderful pieces on exhibit. I remember thinking that I want to create something that would not just be seen in galleries, but that could be viewed by the masses and have a practical application in every day life. As soon as I discovered graphic design I knew this is exactly what I wanted to do.
I have been working at Commonwealth//McCann for over six years now as a Studio Production Artist and let me tell you, I love it. I have the pleasure to work with such a great team of creatives and producers that have taught me so much and I greatly appreciate the experience. Coming from a print background, working solely on digital media for McCann has been an eye opening experience that has allowed me to grow and hone many different skills that would have otherwise gone unrecognized. My graphic design journey has just begun here and I look forward to where it takes me next!
